Notes from the Road
April 21, 2009
Hello! We're in Salt Lake City now, having arrived like thieves in the night. We checked into the beautiful Monaco Hotel at 2 AM. For us it was 3 AM since there was an hour's time difference from Houston. Dinner on the way to the airport was obtained from a drive thru hamburger joint. The catsup from Mary's hamburger squirted on her new jacket but it was worth it -- we were starving and the hamburgers were good!
We'd been at Murder By The Book, a great little mystery bookstore in Houston, where we'd given a talk, answered questions, and signed books. We always enjoy meeting our readers and it's satisfying to know that people have been enjoying our work. The best compliment that Mary has received thus far on the tour was from a woman who exclaimed, "You give me more pleasure than my husband!" A few minutes later she did admit that they were divorced. Still, Mary thinks it would be a great quote for the back of the book! On the last tour, in the same vein, a woman told Carol that she liked Jack Reilly better than her husband! (Jack is Regan Reilly's husband - Regan is a private investigator, and Carol's continuing character.)
This morning we were on "Studio 5" on KSL-TV in Salt Lake City. While we were waiting on the set for our interview, Mary's cell phone went off, blaring "When The Saints Come Marching In" during a cooking segment. Carol frantically dumped the contents of Mary's purse on the couch, grabbed the phone, and shut it off. "That's live television," the producer, Linda Davies, whispered with a laugh.
Right now we're in the hotel room, taking it easy before we go to the Davis County Library event tonight. It will be held at the Northridge High School auditorium in Layton, Utah. Mary is also admiring the ad for her book in today's New York Times!
